Known as a gateway to the Blue Ridge Mountains, the town of Walhalla, South Carolina is situated in the northwestern section of the state about 16 miles from Clemson. Walhalla is home to 3,601 people, according to the 2010 census. Its small size and mountainous location gives the town a quaint and pleasant feel. Walhalla also includes historic points of interest such as St John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places; the Oconee Heritage Center and the nearby Issaqueena Falls and Stumphouse Tunnel.
Walhalla was originally settled by a group of immigrants from the same ship. Among them were Germans, Bavarians, English, Scots, and Irish. The German name Walhalla translates to Garden of the Gods in English. The German influence was strongest in the early days and the city remains famous for its annual Oktoberfest that takes place the third weekend in October.

Because of its rich German heritage, Walhalla is known for its annual Oktoberfest on the third weekend of October.
The Oconee Station State Historic Site was created in the late 18th century to serve as a military compound against attack from the Cherokee Indians. It later became a trading post. The park sits on 210 acres and has some of the original buildings still standing. It is also has hiking trails, a pond and access to Station Cove Falls all by well maintained trails.

Along with its rich history and popular local events, Walhalla’s residents also enjoy the town’s climate, which includes warm summers and cool winters. Summer’s average temperatures are in the 70s and winters are generally in the 40s. July can reach 90° plus, and winters may see temperatures in the low 20°s. Annual precipitation averages about 60 inches with March being the wettest month.
