Located on the Savannah River between Georgia and South Carolina, Lake Hartwell with 962 miles of shoreline is one of the largest and most popular lakes in the southeast. Built by the U.S Army Corps of Engineers between 1955 and 1963 as part of a hydropower, flood control and navigation project, Lake Hartwell annually draws millions to its campgrounds, clear waters, fishing and boating.
The early history of the Hartwell region has been passed down through both Cherokee oral tradition and the journals of early settlers. Aside from the legendary Nancy Hart – a renowned patriot and Lake Hartwell’s namesake – the area was known for its anti-British activity during the Revolutionary War.
